Certification

The Art of Control® offers certification classes as a U.S.P.A. ™ / Authentic Pilates ™ Instructor Certification Center and also provides programs in Mat Pilates instruction at SUNY Purchase.

As a "Teacher of Teachers," Simona Cipriani, Director of the Art of Control®, for the U.S.P.A.™ Teacher Certification Program, offers instruction in the first and oldest Pilates professional training program in the world. In addition, The Art of Control® hosts other workshops and programs offered by other reknowned U.S.P.A.™ Teachers providing some of the most unique and exciting opportunities for learning advanced Pilates in the area.

New in Fall 2009!
Pilates Mat Certificate Program at SUNY Purchase

Gain control of your health and well being through the Pilates Method! This four-course program certifies you as an instructor of the Pilates mat program. Learn to physically perform the Pilates mat exercises and instruct clients on how to perform them with clear and detailed step-by-step directions. Master the physical and mental principles and philosophy of the Pilates Method. Gain a solid understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the motion of the body. Use this certification to find employment in Pilates studios, chiropractic and physical therapy offices, and fitness/athletic clubs, or to start your own business. Instruction is provided by Simona Cipriani, a master teacher of the original Pilates Method with direct lineage from Joseph H. Pilates.

Required Courses
1. Pilates Mat I (Beginner) (offered Fall 2009)
2. Pilates Mat II (Intermediate) (offered Fall 2009)
3. Anatomy and Physiology for Pilates (offered Fall 2009)
4. Pilates Mat III (Advanced) (offered Spring 2010)

Required Observation/Practice
Students are required to accumulate a total of 150 apprentice (observation/practice) hours at instructor-approved studios; up to 10 hours may be accumulated by viewing the recommended Pilates videos. It is highly recommended that students amass 50 hours between each Pilates course. Only original Pilates mat work is acceptable; no other work, including Pilates equipment work, will be counted. Students with an extensive background in fitness and bodywork may apply for an exemption in writing with a copy of their résumé.

Annual Workshop to Maintain Certification
To maintain certification, one full-day workshop must be taken annually.

Costs
In addition to the tuition, there is a $25 nonrefundable registration fee paid once per semester. Exam retakes, when applicable, require an additional
$150 fee.

Pilates Mat I (Beginner)
Explore the life of Joseph H. Pilates and how he evolved the art and science of Contrology (the Pilates Method of body conditioning). Learn the six major principles of Pilates and the importance of the “powerhouse” and “core stabilization.” Master the beginner Pilates mat exercises and learn to instruct clients with clear and detailed step-by-step directions. Integrate these Pilates exercises into your daily body-conditioning routine. Ends with a two-part exam: the practicum/oral exam (approximately 30 minutes) and the written exam (approximately 60 minutes). Bring workout clothes, mat, and weights. Required text: Return to Life Thought Contrology by Joseph H. Pilates.

Pilates Mat II (Intermediate)
Take your Pilates training to the next level! Beginning with a review of Pilates Mat I, learn the “five elements of the mind” and the importance of the mind-body-spirit connection. Study the importance of resistance work in the Pilates workout. Master the intermediate Pilates mat exercises and learn to instruct clients with clear and detailed step-by-step directions. Integrate these Pilates exercises into your daily body-conditioning routine. Ends with a two-part exam: the practicum/oral exam (approximately 30 minutes) and the written exam (approximately 60 minutes). Bring workout clothes, mat, weights, and Thera-Band.

Anatomy and Physiology for Pilates
Learn the basic anatomy and physiology of the skeletal system by studying the bones and major joints of the body. Study postural concepts used to describe body position, such as anatomic position and static terminology (anterior, posterior, etc.) Learn movement terms (flexion, extension, etc.) and how the body moves in planes and around axes. Understand basic skeletal anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology so that you can begin to critically understand, discuss, and teach the strengthening and stretching exercises of the Pilates Method of body conditioning! Ends with a two-part exam: the practicum/oral exam (approximately 30 minutes) and the written exam (approximately 60 minutes). Textbook required.

SPRING 2010 Courses

Pilates Mat III (Advanced)
Take your Pilates training to the highest level! Beginning with a review of Pilates I and II, learn to use small equipment like the Magic Circle, pole, and Thera-Band to facilitate the progression of the client’s workout. Incorporate hands-on skill, imagery, rhythm, and dynamic motion in the exercises to help the learning process of the client. Master the advanced Pilates mat exercises and learn to instruct clients with clear and detailed step-by-step directions. Integrate these Pilates exercises into your daily body-conditioning routine. Ends with a two-part exam: the practicum/oral exam (approximately 30 minutes) and the written exam (approximately 60 minutes). Bring workout clothes, mat, weights, and Thera-Band.

About the Pilates Mat Instructor:
Simona Cipriani, a teacher/trainer with the U.S. Pilates Association (U.S.P.A.) and a certified instructor of the Authentic Pilates Method for more than 14 years, studied extensively with master teacher Romana Kryzanowska, who was trained by Joseph Pilates. Also a dancer for more than 25 years, Ms. Cipriani has performed in both Europe and the U.S. She has appeared frequently as a dancer on television and in commercials, and has appeared on television presenting the Pilates Method of body conditioning. Ms. Cipriani was chosen to assist athletes as a massage therapist at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, and the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy. She is a member of several professional organizations, including the nonprofit Pilates Method Alliance.
